Accessibility at Dale Liverpool Tours

I want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy my tours of Liverpool.

Because my experiences take place across a historic city, on public streets, inside heritage locations and in different vehicles, accessibility varies between tours. Rather than describing every experience as fully accessible, I believe it is more useful to explain the potential barriers honestly and make reasonable adjustments wherever possible.

If you have a mobility requirement, visual or hearing impairment, neurodivergence, sensory requirement or anything else that may affect your experience, please contact me before booking or travelling. I am always happy to discuss the tour with you personally.

Where possible, tours can be adapted around individual requirements.

Walking Tours

My walking tours take place through Liverpool city centre and other areas of the Liverpool City Region.

Liverpool city centre is generally accessible, but routes can include uneven pavements, cobbled streets, road crossings, gradients and historic areas where completely step-free access may not always be possible.

Where an appropriate alternative exists, I can adapt the route to avoid unnecessary steps or particularly difficult surfaces.

Tours are delivered at a comfortable walking pace and I am happy to slow the pace, introduce additional stops or allow extra time where required.

Seating is not available throughout every walking route, although I can plan rest stops around available seating where possible.

If you use a wheelchair, mobility scooter or walking aid, please contact me before booking so I can discuss the particular route with you.

Private Tours

One of the advantages of booking a private tour is flexibility.

Routes, duration, pace, stops and locations can often be adapted around the requirements of the individual or group. If somebody has limited mobility, for example, I can reduce walking distances and concentrate on locations that are easier to access.

If your private tour involves a vehicle, accessibility will depend upon the vehicle being used. Please tell me about any wheelchair, mobility aid or vehicle-access requirements before booking so that I can establish what arrangements are available rather than assume that a particular vehicle will be suitable.

Private tours can also include additional rest stops and comfort breaks where required.

Bus and Group Tours

Accessibility on bus and coach tours varies according to the vehicle and itinerary.

Some vehicles require passengers to negotiate steps when boarding and may not be suitable for all wheelchairs or mobility equipment. Where Dale Liverpool Tours is working with a third-party coach or transport provider, the accessibility specification of that vehicle is determined by the operator.

If you are arranging a group containing somebody with mobility or access requirements, please let me know before the tour. I can then discuss the itinerary and, where applicable, work with the transport provider to identify the most appropriate arrangements.

Stops involving walking can also be adapted where the itinerary permits.

George Harrison's Childhood Home

George Harrison's childhood home at 25 Upton Green, Speke is an original residential property rather than a purpose-built visitor attraction. Its historic layout therefore creates some unavoidable accessibility limitations.

I want visitors to understand these before arriving.

Entering the house

The tour now begins in the back garden, meaning the opening section of the experience takes place before visitors need to enter the property.

There is a step when entering the house from the garden. The front entrance also involves steps and is not step-free.

Inside the house

The majority of my guided interpretation takes place downstairs, where seating is available.

I proactively offer seats to visitors who may find standing difficult, and nobody is rushed through the experience.

The first floor is accessed by a domestic staircase. Approximately 10–15 minutes of the guided tour normally takes place upstairs.

Visitors who can use the stairs but need additional time are welcome to take them slowly and rest as required.

Unfortunately, there is currently no lift or step-free access to the first floor.

If you cannot access upstairs, you are still able to experience the substantial majority of the tour. I will provide additional interpretation and answer questions downstairs so that you do not simply miss that part of George's story.

Because this is a small historic residential property, wheelchair manoeuvrability will also depend upon the dimensions and mobility requirements of the individual visitor. Please contact me before booking and I will explain the layout as clearly as possible.

Hearing and Visual Requirements

My tours are primarily delivered through spoken interpretation, conversation and the locations themselves.

If you have a hearing or visual impairment, please contact me beforehand. I can adapt where I stand, the pace and style of commentary and the way in which I describe locations or objects.

You are also welcome to tell me what works best for you rather than having me make assumptions about the assistance you require.

Neurodivergence and Sensory Requirements

Every visitor is different, so please tell me if there is anything that would make the experience more comfortable.

Where possible, I can provide information about the itinerary in advance, explain what to expect, allow additional breaks and adapt the pace of a private experience.

If crowds, noise or other sensory environments are a concern, I can also advise you about what you are likely to encounter on the particular tour you are considering.

Assistance Dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome on my walking tours.

For tours involving vehicles, heritage properties or third-party locations, please contact me beforehand so that I can confirm the arrangements applicable to the particular experience.

Toilets and Comfort Breaks

Facilities vary considerably between experiences.

Walking tours take place in public areas and therefore do not have dedicated toilet facilities throughout the route. I can advise visitors about nearby facilities and incorporate comfort breaks where practical.

Private and bus-tour arrangements depend upon the itinerary and venues being visited.

George Harrison's childhood home has a domestic toilet, but it is not a purpose-built accessible toilet.

If access to an accessible toilet is an important requirement for your visit, please contact me beforehand so that I can advise you appropriately.

Please Talk to Me Before Your Tour

Accessibility is individual. A barrier for one visitor may not be a barrier for another, and I would rather have a conversation with you than make assumptions about what you can or cannot do.
